I’m a printmaker working mainly in lithography, relief, and screenprinting, but I’m also drawn to the spaces between these media—drawing, watercolor, and artist books. My work often centers on the body: the physical space it occupies and the metaphorical space it represents. I draw from memory and personal stories, and much of my practice is self-reflective, incorporating self-portraits and photographs.

The work in this exhibition continues my exploration of self-portraiture. I think of self-portraits as a conversation between my past, present, and future selves, especially as I navigate the world as a Black queer woman. With each image, I ask: Who is this person in the world, and what space does this Black queer woman inhabit?

Printmaking has always felt essential to my process. Its rhythm—of reflection, repetition, and reimagining—mirrors the way I think about identity and time. I’m drawn to print’s democratic nature too: how printed matter can circulate widely, carry stories, and give voice to people who are often left out of the narrative.

Rae Press Studio is named after my mother who wholeheartedly supported my growth and development as an artist at a time when Black women’s voices in art were not amplified. I grew up in the Bronx, NY, and still consider myself a Bronx girl while living in the Boston area for the past 30+ years. I received a BA from Wellesley College and an MFA from the University of Iowa. I’ve participated in artist residencies at the Center for Contemporary Art in Connecticut, the Lower East Side Print Shop in New York City, Vermont Studio Center, Pickwick Press in Portland, Maine, and recently returned from a residency at the Grafikwerkstatt in Dresden, Germany. My work has been shown locally and abroad, notably at Bunker Hill Community College, the Towne Gallery at Wheelock College, The Boston Printmakers North American Print Biennial, Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, Tama Art University Museum in Japan, University of Osnabruck in Germany, Adobe Books Backroom Gallery in San Francisco, Muskat Studios in Somerville MA, and the Old Fire Station Loschwitz in Dresden, Germany. I have taught in various colleges and universities around the Boston area and am currently Chair of Visual Arts at Milton Academy.
